What is Glycemic Load?
What is Glycemic Load?
Glycemic Load is equal to the Glycemic Index of a food times the number of grams of carbohydrates in the serving of food that's being eaten. Glycemic Load is believed to correlate more directly to blood sugar level changes than the Glycemic Index itself.
Some strategies for lowering dietary Glycemic Load include:
- Increasing the consumption of whole grains, nuts, legumes, fruits and non-starchy veggies.
- Decreasing the consumption of starchy high-Glycemic Index foods like potatoes, white rice and white bread.
- Decreasing the consumption of sugary foods such as cookies, cakes, candy and soft-drinks.
